How To Diagnose A Yeast Infection

Knowing how to diagnose a yeast infection can save your good health, and save your internal organs from permanent damage. If you get a diagnosis of your vaginal infection wrong, and you have another infection, you risk losing the ability to have any more children.

Your doctor will diagnose a yeast infection

The only way to guarantee a correct diagnosis of a Candida infection is to visit your doctor. Even your doctor won't just assume you have a yeast infection from your symptoms. Your doctor will take a culture test to make sure that your vagina is infected with the Candida Albicans yeast. This is the only way to make sure you are given the correct treatment for your infection.

Self diagnosis

If you choose to self diagnose the infection in your vagina and you get it wrong then a few things can happen. The first one is, you'll be treating another infection with a yeast infection anti fungal cream.

At first the anti fungal yeast treatment will relieve the symptoms of whatever infection you have so you'll start to think you've got a yeast infection. But then your infection will flare up again as soon as the treatment stops. This is where you get two choices of what to do next.

Some women go out and buy another OTC yeast infection treatment, and start using it again because they think their yeast infection has returned. This not only lets the real infection that is getting masked get worse, but a yeast infection with resistant yeast is being created. Because the yeast is being exposed continually to the same treatment it will mutate to fight it off. So the real infection is getting worse, and a sper yeast is being created that is resistant to treatment.

The lucky women that have misdiagnosed their infection will go to see their doctor, and start getting the correct treatment for the real infection.

Dangers if you incorrectly diagnose a yeast infection

If you incorrectly diagnose a yeast infection, and then you don't see your doctor in time this could cause damage to your reproductive organs. You also have the risk of getting pelvic inflammatory disease ( PID ) which can also lead to permanent damage to your reproductive organs. PID can also cause an ectopic pregnancy.

What your vaginal infection could be

If you misdiagnose your vaginal infection it could be one of the following...

  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhoea
  • Genital herpes

These vaginal, bacterial infections all have similar symptoms that could be mistaken for a yeast infection. It's much better to be safe than sorry and pay your doctor a visit at the first sign of any symptoms associated with your genital area.
